ToME has two sets of keyboard commands; players may use either the original keyset or the roguelike keyset. Most players use the original keyset, as it is default; but I use and prefer the roguelike keyset for many reasons.
Here's my anecdotal comparison: beating Dungeonmans in Roguelike mode for the first time and getting 100% achievements took me 43 hours, according to Steam metrics. TOME was also my first roguelike and I haven't found one like it. However, you might enjoy ADOM. Also, since you mentioned fluid combat - Jupiter Hell is the only roguelike where I forgot I was playing turm based. It has nothing to do with TOME in terms of setting etc
